Hi everyone, I know next to nothing about external storage and which brands are great.

Could I get a recommendation? Here are my goals:

- min 1 TB
- stores movies, TV shows, photos, etc
- portable (I guess they all are, but what if I want to bring it during say vacations?)
- might be used for back up storage when I want to format my desktop
- great price for performance ratio/value

Thanks! :)

ps: Do these go on sale often? Trying to get the best bang for my buck :p

Hi there Jwai,

In case you decide to go with Western Digital, you can check WD Elements out. I think it will be a nice fit for the point you have listed.
Check it out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Z6KUzC

I guess you can check WD My Passport out as well: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=qfDc4T
It has pre installed backup software as well as hardware encryption(chip in the enclosure automatically encrypts the data that is transferred to the drive).

It may be a good idea to wait for some more responses as well.

Let me know in case you have some more questions,
