I have a Hyper 212 EVO on this 4690k, it's a Fractal R4 case which has 2 120mm fans at the front and 1 120mm fan on the back which sits right behind the Hyper 212 and its 120mm fan.

@ 4.0ghz stock voltage it hit a max of 65C in Prime95. @ 4.1ghz and 4.2ghz it was 70C but then @ 4.3ghz suddenly the max temp was 90C.

Does this seem weird? I know the 212 isn't great but it's decent, though I'm not too sure what to expect with it. I am considering re-seating it with some different thermal paste as I think I used the stuff it came with last time.

The more you overclock a cpu in speed, the more heat is produced.
Add to the fact you often have to also increase the core voltage of the cpu to keep it rock solid when overclocked running in windows then putting it under load to check it`s stable.

You really want to be looking at a water cooling loop, with a decent sized radiator.
Anyway was the temp 90c while just windows was loaded, because if it was then the cpu is not going to survive when putting it under moderate load like playing a game.

If your serious about trying to get a good overclock of the cpu there is no doubt water cooling is required.
Better safe than sorry.

Oh it actually is at auto. @ 4.0ghz at 100% load the core voltage is reading 1.109V

yeah. auto will just automatically bump the core voltage according to whatever the manufacturer thinks you need. typically this will result in very high temps. i'd simply change it to manual and set the voltage at 1.109V and then start over with 4.1, if it's not stable you'll need to add a little vcore until it is, then you can move up to 4.2...

i bet you'll have much better luck like this.
