Hello,

I have a 5 year old gaming build and my mobo just died out. Im looking for a replacement mobo and a compatible cpu which can handle mid to high level gaming, especially GTA 5 and Arkham knight, when it releases.

Following is my current build:

Intel Core i5-750 3.5 Ghz Quad core CPU
Gigabyte GA-P55-US3L motherboard
MSI 5770 Hawk Edition 1GB DDR3 GPU
Corsair TW3X4G1333C9 (4gb) 1333 Mhz RAM
Corsair 450vx PSU
500gb seagate hdd

After looking at several threads and gathering information, I've shortlisted the replacement components as:

1. Asus H97-Plus motherboard
or
Gigabyte GA-H97-D3H motherboard

2. Intel Core i5-4440 CPU
3. Additional 4gb ram

Is this a good build? I realise I'm shifting from 1st-gen i5 to Haswell i5. Will the new motherboard and CPU work well with the rest of the build? Also, is 450 watts psu sufficient for the new build?

Any advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance:)

Get the Gigabyte GA-H97-D3H motherboard as it has better audio solution. Yes that processor and additional RAM is fine. But I would suggest a slight change:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($176.98 @ NCIX US)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Video Card ($114.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $291.97

- i5 4460 is a Haswell Refresh better than 4440, which costs only $3 extra.
- MSI 5770 may struggle because its a 1GB DDR3 card. GTX 750 Ti can handle GTA V with high graphical fidelity @1080p, as the game is pretty well optimized. Batman too you should be able to play with good settings.
- Keep the PSU, as the GTX 750 Ti only require a 400W PSU that can delivery 19Amps or more its +12V rails.
- Your 450W PSU can deliver 33Amps on its +12V rails, which is more than enough to power your entire rig.
- For gaming 8GB of RAM is the sweet spot. So additional 4GB is sensible.

Note:

If budget allows you can go this card, which will play all upcoming games like champ @ 1080p, also only require 430W PSU that can deliver 20Amps or more on its +12V rails:

Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card ($184.99 @ Micro Center)
Total: $184.99

But before getting either of these cards, first check if the MSI 5770 can handle those games at least at medium graphical fidelity @ 720p. If not then go for new graphics card.

Cheers!

It's a shame when stuff dies.
I agree with the 4460 comment.
It may be better for you to get some ddr3-1600 cl9 (slight performance increase) at about 50usd/8gb instead of having to match the old ram. only 12$ more than amazon had your ram for but it would be 2x4gb. If you mix ram you may have issues.
I have to recommend the gigabyte motherboard out of those 2 as well. I will never buy asus again.
The others have already recommended gpu changes, they are great choices, basically it's time to rebuild! :p
