Hello; first off, I hope this is the right section to post this. Second, I'm not very tech savvy, so I apologize if this is a rather stupid question. I know a general amount to get by/know generally what is good, but what I want to know, is if upgrading from a GTX 780 graphics card to a GTX 980 (or perhaps a GTX 970) would harm the computer? As in, overheating, blah blah blah.

The reason I ask this is due to being under warranty, and I'm pretty sure if I upgrade cards, it will be void. If there is the slightest chance it might cause issues, then I'll be waiting on it to upgrade.

This is the rig: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8950340&SRCCODE=WEBGOOPA&scid=scplp845494&gclid=CJ3wwZb698UCFQQRHwod220Avg

Any suggestions/etc are welcome.

Solution
it will fit, but really... a upgrade from gtx 780 to 980... not really worth it. its basicly upgrading from non-OCed 780 to a OCed 780ti.

so you will see alittle to even NO performance increase in games.

Thank you for your answer Zanda!

I was actually looking to upgrade for one game in particular--its in Early Access and they are still working out optimizations--ARK: Survival Evolved. They have the game's trailer running on a GTX 980, and at the moment, they have Medium settings set for 780's (and ones close to its tier) they have an epic setting for the 960's and higher. The way I see it, I doubt I'll need it for any games right now, though in the future, games will eventually use it; so when I would gather enough cash to upgrade, I could get something in the 900's.

I plan on waiting to see how the game progresses in terms of optimization though. Some people are having issues with 980 cards and such with the game while others are running well. I'll probably wait on things though :)

I have the 980, its a great card, but if you are looking for something for that can run ARK at high settings get the GTX980Ti, better card.
not worth upgrading 780to980 but 780to980ti would be a larger jump.
also the 9XX cards are using maxwell Chip designs so they use less power, OC better, and run cooler.

btw, I don't feel bad about getting a 980 over a 980ti, here in New Zealand the 980 is $900 and the 980ti is $1450 so really the extra 15-25% performance increase isn't worth the extra $550.

also I plan on buying that game as well, once I get my operation done in a week and I'm out of hospital I would be happy to test it on my 980.
I have a few other tests people want me to do on my card anyway, btw if you do want me to test it I only have one over card at home atm, so I can also test my gtx 750 if you like.

Depending on cost, I might end up with just a 980; would you happen to know any places that are reputable that have some cheaper prices than the usual? I figure its gonna cost a pretty penny of course, but, obviously you wanna save all those pennies you can XD

I've seen it for about $450 - $550 as a 980. 980TI's here in US are about.. $649 from this site: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=PPSSNNBMSMNSTH&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleKWLess&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleKWLess-_-Category-_-Nvidia-_-GTX-980Ti&gclid=CMbMibOr-MUCFZUXHwoduSQAVA&gclsrc=aw.ds

And good luck with your speedy recovery! As far as testing, its okay :) If you would like to, feel free--all info helps ^^ But be warned--lots of people have been having difficulties overall at the moment--though the dev team is pushing updates out like there is no tomorrow--optimization is their top priority atm. :)
