MAD CATZ R.A.T. Mouse 5 or Logitech G502 Proteus Core?

They both look badass, and are similar price. RAT would be more of a risk given its wildly different shape, as it might not be comfortable for me. Logitech is a more likely fit and has better reviews. Logitech also has more buttons..

I've heard unconfirmed rumours of RAT mice having inconsistently terrible build quality, and that they break easily. I don't know what to think of rumours like this?

Opinions?

Thanks :)

I've had my RAT for a few years and I love it. Build quality was good. I have large hands and have had trouble finding mice to fit it but the RAT is everything I could want. I am intrigued by this Logitech Proteus Core however, it looks great.

I have a RAT 7 and I have been using it extensively for the past 3 years. The sensor - twin-eye Phillips laser, would fall asleep once in a while (like every other week) and wont wake up until the mouse is replugged or the computer restarted (buttons though, they still work, which means the one at fault is the laser). The RAT 5 however got recently updated with an Avago sensor - which does not exhibit this issues. As far as I know, only a portion of the RAT 7 users are affected by the falling asleep Phillips sensor.

So last year (2 years in usage) a little thumb rest retention plastic broke. Nothing a little glue cant fix. But since your thumb rest on the RAT 5 is static - you wont have this issue.

So up to this day I am happy with my RAT 7. It is the only mouse that fits this good. I have above average length of my fingers (but not that long), but my hand is rather wide. The RAT 7 is the only mouse up until that fits my hand this good and lets me model or do my 3D for 7-8/12 hours per day without feeling any fatigue in my hand. Even with the weird shape - it is very very comfortable mouse if you have larger hands, or if your don't like to squeeze thin mice like the Deathadder for example.

Good to know, my hands are bigger than average and I thought the RAT looked really small, but I guess not.

If you were to buy a new mouse now (and didn't already have one) would you still choose the RAT or the Logitech?

Thanks for clearing up the build quality issues. And the sizing sounds great! I'll try and find a shop somewhere where I can try the Logitech out, see if it's as good as everyone says..

Do keep in mind that the RAT 7 has a thumb rest that can be rotated to the left to increase the overall width of the mouse. I have my RAT 7 with the thumb rest taken out as much as possible. It adds around 1 cm in overall width. I also use the elevated palm rest. I have it slided somewhere around mid position, increasing the overall length of the mouse by approx 2 cm and the height by half a cm. The RAT 5 does not give you the opportunity to increase the width that much, but you do have the same flexibility in length.

Noted.
That's one of the draws to the RAT as well, it's personalisation.

I was just trying to give you a guideline to why which model RAT fits you better. The price from RAT5 to RAT7 is steep, and the sensor issues (if you are from the unlucky) might maybe overweight the plus of full compared to partial customization in your eyes.

Yeah I think the RAT 7 is way out of my budget. Anyway, partial customisation is better than no customisation right?
