apparently my laptop has sata 2 . noticed today its hdd started clicking,so its gonna be a goner soon.this is the 2nd hdd which will be dying. tha lappy is nearly 5 or 6 yrs old.

my parents dont have much data to store on it.they only have some videos and pics and a * of scans worth 60 gig which they ABSOLUTELY need. important data i keep on my desktop. so it can be said that external 1tb will be useless, but i dont mind having an external hdd around. comes handy.

i wanted to switch to ssd , as apart from performance boost, it wont have any moving parts , so a longer life span.am i right on this ? or hdd is fine ?

whaddoya guys suggest?
128gb ssd + 1tb external or 256gb

please give a detailed answer supported with reasons.

Windows will use up a nice chunk of the SSD. It will make windows boot faster, and anything else that is stored on it load faster. But SSD's need unused space to perform properly. So you never want to fill one completely full. Get an SSD that is bigger than you think they will need. If your parents are likely to need more space than the 256GB SSD, then I would also get a new hard drive for them.

Personally, I have a 1TB SSD in my system. I ran this system for over a year with just that SSD in here for storage. A few days ago, I finally installed a 2TB hard drive just to backup the SSD to. $70 for a 2TB HD is nice and cheap. You may want to do the same thing with your parents system.

For the "scans worth 60 gig which they ABSOLUTELY need"....that needs to be on multiple drives. No matter what type. Drives die, files get deleted. Backups are the key here.

As for what you need?
A 256SSD and an external something drive for backups. And don't say that is too expensive. How much are those scan files worth?
