8350 vs 4790k

Hi! I'm going to making a pc and I needed help on what the parts should be. The first build is the 8350 and includes a GTX 970: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/BFF2GX the next is a 4790k build with a GTX 960: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/BpqF99 What I wanted to know was which build is better? Personally I'll be using my PC for stuff like video editing and maybe recording with my friends. Also if you have any recommendations then go ahead! But try to keep it at a price range of about 1200 dollars (including peripherals) Thanks!

You could drop the cpu cooler and possible the SSD for now to fit your budget. Or perhaps get a cheaper microphone/headset for now.

I'm just afraid that the stock cooler might cause the 4790k to thermal throttle :/

Intel I7 hyper threading alone will blow out amd fx 8350 on editing.

How hot will it get? Can the stock cooler support the heat and not make it thermal throttle? Thanks for the info!

Price Fluctuate so make sure to shop around.. i know frys have the motherboard on this list for $170 now... I saw it yesterday. For the cpu just look around on the net for cheap price. i7 5930k if you can because its better for editing.

I built my pc for video eiditing and haswell - e is a way to go for editing but my pc will be out of your price range.

To put things into perspective for you, the FX-8350 is beaten by the i5-4690k. It's not as powerful as many people think. Get the 4790k, but it will definitely be bottlenecked by a GTX 960.

For gaming, video capture and encoding, the 8350 is as good or even slightly better than an i7, depending on software optimizations and overclocking.

But if you make heavy use of Adobe or similar video editing suites you'll see around a 15% improvement with an i7. They are well optimized for Intel CPUs.

So it depends which set of tasks you will do more often.

All considered, I'd recommend the i7 or even the Xeon build above for your purposes. I think it will strike the best balance between the tasks you want to do.

The i5 beats the FX on some benchmarks, but is beated by the FX on other benchmarks. However, it also currently costs about $50-60 USD more than the FX. That might be small enough of a margin to go with the GTX 970 on an Intel build...but on the other hand, for the same cost you could fit an SSD or even more RAM (RAM being more important on an editing build, especially if you can get to 16GB or more).

The i7 handily beats the FX in all benchmarks. However, it's way more expensive -- about $150 or so USD more -- which means that in order to fit the GTX 970 in you'll either have to pay a lot more money or cut corners somewhere else (i.e. less RAM, no SSD/smaller HDD, etc.).

As for the OP's original builds, unless you're going to massively OC the FX chip you don't need a liquid cooler -- in fact, unless you plan on OC'ing either one you can do just fine with the stock coolers -- which cut about $40-50 off of its cost (offset by adding the additional case fans from the Intel build). That puts both builds pretty much on par...& given the choice between an FX-8350/GTX 970 build & an i7-4790K/GTX 960 build, I think I'd prefer the first one for better graphics horsepower.

I would suggest FX8350 any day. I have mine OCd to 4.5 with a 990FX board and it runs like a charm. Intel will surely give you more FPS due to its superior single core performance but this does not make the FX inferior. Maximum you will see a 5 or 8 FPS difference in poorly threaded games and 2-5 FPS in multi threaded games.

For rendering, editing, streaming you will hardly see any difference. I would recommend saving that extra money to get a nice Sabertooth mobo and a Corsair H100i liquid cooling set-up to OC that beast. I have both and I do not see any difference to be honest. Price to Performance ratio, the FX wins any day.
