I want to upgrade my current Phenom II x4 cause I need more power, more cores hopefully (for VM) and more RAM. I only buy AMD so I am not interested in Intel suggestions. The question is, when are we getting the new excavator FX cpus? Not release to OEM date, but when we are going to see them CPU on shelves. I don't want to spend on current FX cpus since they are epxensive for what they offer comparin to my current cpu.

The release date is said to be 2nd or 3rd Quarter of next Year for the ZEN Architecture. But Excavator is set to release mid this year. So it may be on shelves by the end of this year max. But if you do want to upgrade, Upgrade the Mobo and the CPU to the FX Chips since the Excavator would also be using AM3+ Socket as far as I know.

Processor I would suggest would be AMD FX 8320E.

Hmm I though I read somewhere that this time Dekstop cpus will be coming out first in contrast of previous releases where server versions were out first.
I read many articles but I recall that there will be excavator FX cpus and that it will be AM4 socket for both APUs and CPUS and not FM3 like it was expected.
Maybe I missed something.

The thing now is that current FX cpus are not that big upgrade for me and if there isn't going to be a new FX line then I might give up on AMD after all. Maybe they are not interested in the Desktop market hence there is no point supporting them in that area.

AMD seems to be pretty much interested in the Desktop market to me. They seem to be just waiting for the DDR4 tech to be more reliable and affordable. The next generation of RAM is as much important as the next gen CPUs. If you do not want to go with FX and still want an upgrade, I would say, go for the Phenom II x6. Its very good even though of earlier generation. It can still hold its own in many cases even with the latest programs and games.

Why would amd be waiting for ddr4 to be more reliable and affordable? Intel's had ddr4 options available for almost a year already and is about to release yet another ddr4 supported platform. If the op wants to sacrifice performance for personal preferences of supporting amd there's nothing wrong with that. As many options as both companies have there are options for everyone. Fx is currently aging, not sure if they'll come out with another 'hold over' release. They already did that with the 8350 similar to intel dropping the devil's canyon since broadwell and skylake were delayed. Zen likely won't materialize on shelves for another good 7-8mo since 'early 2016' was the speculation. Their hype got started long before putting something in someone's hands unless they can push them out way ahead of schedule. Architecture redesigns take a lot more than tweaking existing products which could explain the lengthy wait.

That would be true if I was aiming for the best performance today. But AMD has been always giving you what you pay for and most times better performance/price than intel. Picking the best AMD may not be as fast as the best Intel but it won't be that expensive either. And since my usage requires more cores/ram and not the best IPC, then I don't see why I would not support AMD. Don't get me wrong though. If AMD doesn't launch something that is worth the money, then I am no charity.

That is not a bad idea at all. 2 more cores are always welcome. The only problem with that solution is that I need more RAM. And I could probably invest in a nice 8-16GB kit that I would later use in my new platform, but buying DDR3 now seems like a waste since both manufacturers will be going for DDR4.

At this point of time, DDR3 is much much better than DDR4. AMD would most probably go for support for both DDRs in there new release. Intel I think would also do the same since most users are using DDR3 and DDR4 is more expensive.
