PC Won't POST, ASUS Z87-Pro CPU and DRAM LEDs Blinking

Hello,

I built this PC a few years ago and it has been running fine, other than a minor issue - during cold boots, everything would start up with fans spinning, then hang briefly and fans would stop (~1 second), then startup would continue normally. Other than that the system ran fine.

Here are the components:
ASUS Z87-Pro Motherboard
Intel i7-4770k CPU (not overclocked, hyperthreading disabled in bios)
G-Skill Ripjaws 8g RAM
Corsair RM750 PSU
EVGA GeForce GTX 760 GPU

Last night, the system crashed and failed to reboot, and I noticed a burning smell from the case. I turned off the power supply and unplugged it, and started checking components, but couldn't isolate the smell.

At the moment, the system fails to POST and I see nothing on the monitors, and the CPU_LED and DRAM_LED are both flashing red, neither is solid. Q Codes cycle through a large number, I wasn't able to capture them all. I've tried pressing the MEMOK button, but it just reboots and continues to the same flashing LEDs. I've followed what I can in this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems, but a lot of it doesn't apply to builds that have worked for multiple years.

Also worth noting is the PSU fan doesn't spin on boot, although all other fans spin and the motherboard seems to be getting some power. I know my PSU has some fanless operating conditions but I thought they would start spinning on boot then stop after checking temp.

The Z87-Pro manual states that the CPU/DRAM LEDs will be solid if there's a problem, and flashing indicates testing, at least for the DRAM. I've tried booting with just 1 stick of RAM in different slots and had no success. However, I had different results using a single stick of RAM from a previous build. In one of the slots (DIMM_B02) and only that slot, the LED flashing is different. CPU_LED flashes once, then DRAM_LED flashes slowly for a few seconds, then CPU_LED flashes once again, then DRAM_LED flashes faster for a few seconds, CPU_LED flashes once again, DRAM_LED flashes fast for a few seconds, CPU_LED flashes one last time, then DRAM_LED is solid red. From the manual I think it's testing timings for the ram and failing, and I'm not sure if the RAM from the previous build is compatible, but this behavior only happens in one slot.

I would really appreciate any help possible isolating which component is causing trouble.

1) Test the PSU by paper clip method. http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=63991
2) If the PSU is OK. Try use the USB BIOS flashback to see the MB will update the BIOS or not, and you know it is OK or not, because when you use the USB BIOS flashback, you only connect the PSU to the MB w/o any hardware. And at the same time check the cpu and the cpu socket to see there is burn mark or not.
3) Next try the " Bench it - Troubleshooting " http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1753671/bench-troubleshooting.html start with cpu+ cooler + use the onboard intel HD4600.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I did the paperclip test on the PSU. The wires on the connector are all black, but I used the diagram on this page (http://support.antec.com/support/solutions/articles/1000015319-is-my-power-supply-dead-the-paperclip-test) to find the proper connectors. The case fan started spinning, but the PSU fan did not. When I turned off the power to the PSU, the fan spun maybe 1.5 rotations then stopped.

I haven't started the other steps, but does this suggest the PSU is the problem? It is the component I replaced most recently, as my previous PSU was having problems in this build. What would cause 2 to fail in such quick succession? Also, I had read previously that my specific PSU has a fanless operating mode under low load, and it doesn't do a self-test when starting up.

the PSU fan doesn't spin on boot
The PSU has low noise/zero RPM fan mode, that why I recommend to do the paper clip test, because the fan doesn’t even spin until the power supply is under heavy load.
Because the case fan does spin, so your PSU is fine. What is your previous PSU?

And other way to test your component, you can test them in other PC, like your friend pc.

My previous PSU is a Corsair HX750. As mentioned before, all the case fans spin when I attempt to boot, so there is power going to some of the components.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to another computer with a motherboard/cpu matching my socket, so testing in another PC is not really an option. I've tried booting with the monitor plugged into the motherboard's DVI slot, and only the CPU/Motherboard PSU cables attached, but still zero luck.

The CPU/DRAM LEDs are both flashing when I power on. There is a Q Code LED on the motherboard, but it cycles between about 15 codes continuously, never stopping on one code.
