I have recently build a custom case for my system, however, I have ended up limiting the access to my on board SATA ports quite a bit. I was expecting this and built an external drive cage to go on the case that is close enough to the IO to allow for the use of a RAID/SATA expansion card, but unfortunately, I may have taken too large of a bite.
I am looking into the purchasing of a flexible card (PCIe) to use in the system so that, at first, I can simply use it as a pass through, but then, once/if I get the other drives I am looking at, It can be configured into a RAID 5/6 card.
The cage that I have build is designed to hold (though I very much doubt that I will ever fill it) 6 HDDs and 8 SSDs. Optimally, I would like to have the ability to have a mix of 2 SSDs and a few HDDs in separate RAIDs (mirrored and 5/6) and would also like the ability to have the boot drive be in the cage, but those things are not exactly necessary.
I have a few things that I am looking at as of right now, mainly being the IBM Serveraid M1015 SAS/SATA Controller 46M0831 or the HighPoint RocketRAID 2720SGL 8-Port SAS 6Gb/s PCIe 2.0 x8 RAID HBA. Though the latter is cheaper, I don't like some of the reviews on it. (Yes I am aware that they are SAS ports. I know that I can get spliters) Any other suggestions would very much be welcome.
I have tried to do some research/google-fu, but I am confused at all of the extra features and don't want to buy a 500 dollar card only to find out that I could have spent only 200. Thanks for the help with this problem.
