What is the mimimum GPU required to run 2560x1440 resolution without gaming?

I'm upgrading stuff for my dads dinosaur computer since he has no time. I see all the posts about standards for 1440 gaming but not casual non-gaming usage.

It has a 8600 GT video card right now with 256 MB and 32 cuda cores. He doesn't game at all, just heavy internet and excel/word use.

Is that GPU enough to handle the display comfortably? If not what should it be?

something inexpensive like a HD6450 could do 1440p.

for example.
edit: the monitor has DVI-D and can display that resolution, yes?

Even an 8600 GT would do it fine.

A dual-link DVI output can handle that resolution. Your current graphics card should be able to handle it.

that old card can do that too since he doesn't game i don't see the need to upgrade that card just for those programs or internet navigation

well, yes, but is 256MB enough for today's crap-laden internet?
personally, a 1GB 6450 or similar is my minimum for anything non-gaming.

My 8800GTS-640 can still handle it just fine. I'm sure it's pulling memory from my available system RAM just like the OPs 8600GT would.
