GTX 760 or 770?

Hi community,

Quite a simple question really, but I suppose my circumstances makes it slightly more difficult to answer.

So to put this in some context, I am building a new 'gaming' PC with an FX 8320 as my intended processor, however the final part I am currently indecisive about is whether I should buy a gtx 760 or 770.

Initially, I was planning to go with the gtx 770 before I asked myself, 'do I really need this card over a 760?' The reason for this contemplation is that I am not particularly fussy when it comes to FPS, although I suppose gaming at consistently 40+ FPS would be nice. My current screen resolution is 1680 x 1050 but that could potentially increase in the next few months since I will end up buying a new monitor ( for university). I am interested in playing quite a broad range of games. I say 'interested' since due to current hardware limitations I only really play games such as DOTA 2 and others which aren't particularly demanding, but now since I will have A LOT more time on my hands I think my games library will almost certainly increase to cover almost all genres of games including FPS's and the latest releases hopefully to be played at decent settings (I class decent as medium settings personally - and I think I would be satisfied with that).

Its probably important to note that the reason I am dismissing AMD is solely because I own an Nvidia Shield - so to utilise its capabilities a gtx card is more appropriate.

So the main real question is, in light of these intricacies, is the 760 sufficient? The main reason I ask this is because it would reasonably seem pointless to spend extra on something which would cater to my needs to the same extent as the cheaper product.

This is a small irrelevant sidenote but when I do explore discussions on graphics cards, I often see the phrase 'It can run almost everything on high settings.' What sort of games are in the 'almost' pile?

Anyway,

Any help is much appreciated.

A GTX 960 is about equal to a GTX 760 in gaming performance, with some improvements. Most of the generation upgrade has to do with power efficiency. It does a little more work with much less power now(you get a couple more FPS but the card runs cooler). I probably would get a GTX 770 over a GTX 960, also.
"Anything" usually refers to a game released within the last 6 months that was produced by a AAA publisher and is loaded with eye candy.

@ 1680x1050, a GTX 760 would very likely get you 40+FPS on any game you play with High settings.
@1920x1080, a GTX 760 will still perform nice using High settings. You will dip below 40FPS in demanding games.
A GTX 770 will allow you to get 60FPS in almost all games @ 1920x1080 using High settings. You might get dips below 50 FPS in demanding games.

If you are interested in buying used, let me know as I might be selling mine very soon. I bought it from a Tom's member about 8 months ago and have taken good care of it. I'm upgrading to 1440p 144Hz monitor and the GTX 770 will not be able to handle that by itself, at an acceptable level to me. I have the EVGA GTX 770 SC 2GB with ACX cooler.

Thanks a lot for the response,

I was considering buying one used, but would a gtx 960 be a reasonable compromise?
