MB and CPU swap into HP system, windows won't boot, how do i install z97 chipset drivers?

I have an older i7-920 HP system, win64.

I've replaced the MB adn CPU with an i5-4690K and MSI z97 PC Mate MB.

Boot fails, recovery fails. The normal recovery is use win7 install disk and do repair, but I don't have one.

Is there any way to pre-install the z97 chipset and sata drivers in the working computer using the i7-920 and x58 MB? Is there any other approach that might work. Boot drive is an intel 730 SSD 480GB if that makes a difference.

Solution
Right. A failed motherboard, no problem.
A new one because you want one...completely up to MS.

But aside from the licensing....A new motherboard often (but not always) requires a full reinstall.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. You have found the latter.

And trying to install the new mb drivers when it doesn't exist yet won't work. The driver won't see the applicable hardware.

Sadly, the above answers are true. As soon as you change the motherboard out, it is really not an 'HP system' anymore. The copy of Windows you had is no longer valid, since the OS that came with the system is tied to that specific motherboard.

I can't think of anyway for you to install drivers for Z97 on an X58 system beforehand, because the installer would likely tell you that you're trying to install incompatible software. It's a nice thought but I doubt it'd work. I doubt that's your issue anyway.

First the legal question "is it fair to swap in a new MB on an OEM licence". This post at microsoft says yes. But no flames here please on the legal licence issue, I don't pirate and think that this is a use OK'ed by microsoft, but do not want to debate it. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/replacing-motherboard-on-system-running-oem/9aed1ae6-99f9-477a-940b-d8d9003f9246

For the error, can you technically help me get past the driver install question ? The windows error message is
Status: 0xc000000f

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

My guess is that the z97 drivers are not installed so once the system is far enough into boot the system fails. I had expected F8 to give me a chance to come up and install drivers, so far not joy.

I've never encountered a problem like this before in any of the machines I've built/upgraded. I don't know if I can help you, but I will try my best.

The first thing that comes to mind is the Windows installation disk; you mentioned you don't have one. It also looks like the 'tool' that Microsoft has provided to download the .iso files for Windows 7 only works for retail copies of Windows, and since you are using an OEM license, it will not work for you (I did some Googling to confirm this).

So I must ask: Do you have access to any other computers running Windows 7? If not, maybe a friend or family member does?

If so, I think you could remedy your situation by using your other computer to create a System Repair disk, then use that disk to repair your Windows installation so it'll work with your new motherboard. If I'm right, the Repair disk will automatically detect that there are boot problems and attempt to fix them for you.

If that doesn't work, then I will continue searching the Internet for a solution. Microsoft really made a blunder removing the Windows 7 .iso download links from Digital River; being able to use them would make this whole problem much easier to fix.

Think you are right. Thank you for your post, and for checking out the download for me (no OEM key allowed for image). I'll either borrow or buy a win7 install disk and give that a try. I've got retail win8 disks, and win 10 preview runs great on the new MB -- but I'd like to stick with win7 for a while longer. it's comfortable. I'm the meantime I'm back on the 6 year old i7-920, it's running handbrake at 100% on all 8 threads boosting happily along at 65C. Nice chip. Hope the i5-4690K upgrade is as good.
