Hiya

So I kind of hate repeating myself but in this case i'll make an exception. (titel kind of said it all)

I got this old rig from a nephew of mine, at first it wasnt very stable so it ended up in a reboot loop a few months later. Eventually changed the mobo to a small format one(with a stock cooler on it), swapped the cpu with the one i had and it worked again. but now i have this giant cooler that came from the mallfunctioning board named scythe mugen.

I was wondering if it would be possible to use it on a new gen mobo like the Asus A88X-PRO?

this scythe mugen was used on an intel 775 socket, just to give you an idea of how old this cooler is. also if this wouldn't be possible which cooler would you suggest for the Asus board named above?

thanks in advance.

PS. (for those who are interested)not really questioning why the motherboard died. when i got there to pick up the rig i looked inside and it was one big dust carpet, even the graphic card was completely being smothered by it. (radeon HD 3870x2)

Yes, every version of Mugen is compatible with FM2 and FM2+ sockets. It's possible you may need the original hardware adapters that came with it though to be compatible as the backplates or mounting brackets for Intel and AMD are going to be different. That hardware comes with the cooler, but if it's an older unit you might not still have it. I believe you can get just the mounting brackets and backplate from Scythe though if necessary.

Okay thanks, I'll ask my nephew if he still has it, though going to the store would probably be the easiest way.

my best regards

You'll most likely need to know the exact revision of Mugen. There are versions 1 through 4. They MIGHT all use the same mounting hardware, but I think there are some differences. You'll probably have to get it directly from Scythe as I doubt the hardware is sold in stores. It's possible but unlikely.

It seems like the FM2+ socket needs a bracket with screws instead of the plastic turning clips.

Well i believe its the very first one of the series still with a non-copper base-plate.
I cant seem to find the exact cooler but its not much different from the one in the link below except for the base plate.

When i'm looking for the brackets on the web i am not making any progress either.
though the second link gives an idea of how they look like.

As I said, you won't get them from anybody except for Scythe and you'll need to contact them directly. It's not something that is generally sold as a separate item and has to be arranged through customer service. It might be simpler to just get a different cooler if you can't find the original cooler hardware.

okey thanks
there's still one thing though, I might get the right hardware from my nephew, but will the old hardware be usefull on the new board? because when i look at newer coolers and there fittings, they dont seem to be like the old ones.

Any thoughts ?

The mugen, with the proper hardware, should fit any current CPU socket so long as you have the correct backplate and mounting brackets that came with the cooler. The A88X boards are FM2+ and have been the same for the last few years. I recommend just avoiding the headache of finding the parts, for an older cooler that doesn't have that great of performance compared to more current models, and eliminate any question of performance or hardware compatibility.

This would be a great, inexpensive choice:

Looks like an improvement indeed. thanks for the great advise.
Can i get a push/pull set up on this one?

It's really not necessary, the improvements with single heatsink but dual fan CPU coolers doesn't show more than about 3-5°C improvement, when there is ANY improvement, so I'd probably just use it with the included fan alone. If you're planning to highly overclock or are worried about cooling performance, I'd recommend a higher end cooler like the Cryorig H5, Noctua NH-U14S, NH-D14 or D15, Phanteks PH-TC14PE, or Cryorig R1 Ultimate/Universal. For 45 bucks the Cryorig H5 is a great unit and the NH-U14S from Noctua is outstanding and quiet.
