I just got a brand new MSI R9 290X Gaming, installed new drivers and downloaded monster hunter online benchmark to test it.

Turns out that my system reboots when card reaches 55-65 ºC.
This also happens with other games like planetside 2 or the witcher 1, I haven't overclocked this card, this is happening at stock frequencies... I also have a 750W PSU so i don't think this to be an issue

Can someone figure out what is happening?

Solution

290x requires a quality 750w unit.

That unit blew up when tested by jonny:

It's probably ok for a standard pc.

But big no on a gaming rig, especially with a 290x.

The 290x has power spikes that will make those cheapass teapo capacitors blow up for sure.

You need something from tier 1 or 2 from this list...

Full specs.

Not all power supplies are equal, could be you have a tin can that cant deliver 300w.

Make and model?

cpu is AMD FX6100 @ 4.05GHz with a CM 212 EVO, barely reaches 50-55 ºC under load. PSU model is Coolmax CL-700B (a little crappy and old i believe) was planning on update it anywas but I wanted to try the gpu before. In the meantime I'll try downclocking my cpu, that might help determining if its the psu right?

I got the same results, I will take your advice and try a new PSU since I find hard to believe MSI shipping a defective product, I simply love this brand. I'll let you know the outcome of this!!

Thank you

I am :D

Actually I'm upgrading to a complete new PC, but I started by the last component.

I pretend to build this.

Case: CM stormtrooper.
CPU: AMD FX8370 black edition
Cooler: Noctua NH-D14
Mobo: MSI 970 G series
Ram: Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 1866MHz DDR3
GPU: 2x MSI R9 290X CF
PSU: Corsair RM1000 Gold edition.

So far those are the components

The RM series is not very good(tier 3), there are better units that cost about the same. Here are some good options for a crossfired 290Xs.

You are going to need to put one hell of an OC on that 8370 for it to try and keep up in some games.

No, intel is ideal for gaming. High performance per core.

amd hasn't been good for gaming for a long time.

It's more for people on a limited budget, that also want to do multi core enabled work like rendering.

In gaming even an i3 can sometimes beat a 8350.

No need where you already have 1 290x. Intel cpus work just aswell with AMD cards as they do Nvidia.

Hi!!

I finally installed an Antec 750W 80-PLUS Gold PSU, now the gpu works perfectly :D

(BTW this psu is gorgeous, can't even hear it.)

Now I have to upgrade to a newer CPU like FX-6300 or 8350 and this rig will be awesome, thank you very much for your help guys!!
