CPU Optimal Temperature

I recently decided to clean out my computer, and after removing the CPU fan I saw that it could use some more thermal paste. I don't currently have any, but I sent in an order. My issue is the temperatures that my CPU is currently running at.

Using HWMonitor, the "package" under my CPU temperatures stays around 50C while nothing is running except the desktop. From what I've seen while searching, that's fairly high for an idle temperature. When I launch a game, it starts getting kind of scary. The worst it gets is when I run the game ARK: Survival Evolved. Now that game has some horrible optimization right now, but I wouldn't think that it would make my CPU reach a temperature like 100C. How much of a difference does the thermal paste make? Is that most likely my issue; simply not having enough on the CPU?

Here are my computer specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel i5-3570k @ 3.4 GHz
GTX 970 STRIX
8GB RAM
600W Corsair PSU

Solution
Thermal paste makes all the difference in the world. You need to remove the old thermal paste and replace it with new. Until you do that, you are seriously putting your cpu at risk.

Thanks for the quick response! One thing I forgot to mention is that my fans had been rather loud lately when playing a game. I assume that not having enough thermal paste is the cause of that as well? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to make sure I'm completely resolving the issue.

Alright, hopefully the paste will help everything to run at normal temps again. Thanks for the help!
