Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to install a new SSD on my machine ahead of the Windows 10 release. I want to have everything set before I start putting the drive in, but I'm having some trouble getting a copy of Windows.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery

I'm trying to use that tool to download a copy to a flash drive, to install from when I get the new drive. But when I put in my product key, it won't let me download the image because it says the software was preinstalled on my device, and I need to contact the manufacturer. (We all know how that usually goes, so I decided to ask for help here first).

Is there a better way to do this? I don't want to clone by current system or anything like that, I'd like to start from a fresh install of Windows on the SSD. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

AB

Edit: I tried contacting Gateway, but they say my computer is no longer eligible for support. I went in to their downloads and drivers section to and the O.S. field is "No Results Found."

The download of Windows 7 ISO from Microsoft Software Recovery does not support OEM installations (ie factory pre-installed Windows).

It's only for retail buyers of Windows 7 who have lost or damaged their disc but still have the Product Key.
It clearly says on the right in purple box:

"This site enables you to recover and install Microsoft software purchased through a retailer"

You'll have to clone existing Windows installation to the SSD, or buy a new Windows 7 licence, key & disc from Amazon.

Thanks! That's unfortunate. The follow up is then, do you have a resource / is it possible to clone just the OS over to the new drive? I'm going from a 1tb drive down to 128gb, and I'd like to just have the OS on the new one.
