Solution
What is the intended use? If this is for gaming 6C/12T i7 is a huge waste of money. If you're also using heavy multi threaded applications on the side then it might be worth it. For gaming an i7-4790k would be a much better choice (still 4C/8T) or even the E3-1231 V3. Hell, even an i5-4690k won't bottleneck a single 980Ti and would be a good choice too.

Intel's Xeon, i7, i5, and even i3 series are good for gaming. So is AMD's FX series. The i7 5820K is only a bit better than the Xeon E5-2620 V3. The i7 5820K has better single core and overall performance.
