R7 260X reaching 97C during load

My Sapphire R7 260X reaches upto 97C when under load. Is this safe? I cleaned the fan and the heat sink but that didn't improve the temperature.

Where are these readings coming from? Programs like speccy said my GPU was running at 1 degree celcius and my cpu was running at 120, even though I have integrated graphics on my 7850k, and a hyper 212 evo,. (I didn't smell burning plastic)

Okay I've discovered something really weird today. If I keep Afterburner running while I'm playing Witcher 3, the temperature reading will reach as high as 97/98C within the first 10 minutes. But, if I fire up afterburner right after closing the game, it gives me a reading of 70C.

Is the temperature sensor on my card faulty?

Software temps never seem to be 100% accurate but that is likely due to the stress being taken off of your GPU after the game closes. I would check your case airflow. Have you overclocked this thing at all? 97c would be too high for me.
