Which CPU For The Job?

I'm looking for a CPU that will maximize my framerate and overall gaming experience. Some people might say "well that's easy, the most expensive CPU will do that", but that's not really true because the $4000 Intel Xeon E5-2699 V3 with it's whopping 18 cores barely performs better than an i7 5960x for 1/8 of the price at around $500 when it comes to gaming.

Then you might say "well that's easy, it's because the i7 5960x has a higher clock speed", but I doubt a dual core phenom even overclocked to nearly 5GHz could even compete with the 5960x at stock 3.0GHz speeds.

So my question is, where's the sweet spot of CPUs in all of this? Which CPU (server or consumer CPU) performs best for games at stock speeds?

is the 5960x really the best or does AMD have a CPU that can slay it?

all help is appreciated

Additional cores are not going to fix this issue for you. Higher clock-speed and newer tech are the only thing that can limit that bottleneck on that many high end gpu's...

I planned on having triple 4K monitors with quad-SLI Titan X's, would the 5960x be more useful then, or would the 5930k be overkill enough?

If this is a real thing, I would highly suggest waiting for something new. All current processors would be holding you back from achieving that on a pretty grand scale

Ok, then what about using a dual socket motherboard with dual 5960x's??

really not worth the money, 4k is out of hand at the moment with such setup and being stable.

Higher clock-speed and newer tech are the only thing that can limit that bottleneck on that many high end gpu's. 2new titans will fully saturate the processing power of an i7 @ 4.2-.4.4Ghz. But let me say this, the performance would be sick.

you mean 2 titan Z's?
and i was wondering if the additional speed from the second CPU would be added to the first, but it won't?

Oh titan z? Well +if you don't already own them save your money, they are a bad deal, bigtime. The $600 295x2 is faster by a respectable amount. You'd be far better going with 2x980ti's.

But let's say you already have them, you still need faster/more powerful cpu to push them to the limit. More cores might take some pressure off of the 4 cores pushing the games by being delegated background tasks but it won't improve gaming performance. You see this is where you are at the mercy of the programmers.

If you are gaming only and want to be "future proof" on your cpu choice, buy a 5820k and overclock it on water. The 5820k can support 3 way sli, but a 3 way with a 980ti or titan x will cause bottlenecks, even a 5960x will cause bottlenecks and a dual socket mobo will cause to many issues with general setup and usability as there not designed for sli and gaming use, and are designed for the server environment.

Take a look at jayztwocents system called skunkworks on youtube, he has 5960x with 3 way sli titan x on a custom water loop.

Also, take a look at Linustechtips render farm with his 2699 v3s and his issues with those particular dual socket boards when attempting to run sli with titans xs.

ok, so if I did quad SLI with 4 Titan X's and overclocked the 5960X to 4.5GHz instead of the stock 3.0GHz, would the 5960X still be the bottleneck, or would I be able to play games in 4K on triple monitors?

im sorry man, are you that slow to understand ?
if you read what people said (repeatedly) and watched the ncix test on exactly what you want, you will realize it is going to bottle neck.
cpu's cant handle such a thing at the moment, simple as that.
save your money for the future, such a build is useless at the time just to play games or show off.
maybe buy a car with such money, go out and have fun.

if time taught us anything is that we are coming near a new generation of a step up in technology, give it some time and lavish with your spending.
