I have had my new pc build for 6 months now and have been using it without problems. Recently it has been giving me artifacts and crashing to a black screen, when i start up again windows sometimes reports it as a bluescreen.

I am lead to believe that it is a software error of some kind (like drivers or something), because i have tested this problem in safe mode and no error occurred. it is starting to happen more and more frequently (5 - 10 mins after startup), although sometimes i can game for hours on end with no problems. The error almost always happens when i watch a movie in VLC in fullscreen.

I used 'Whocrashed' to try and figure out what was going wrong. It says the most likely causes are "atikdag.sys" and "atikpag.sys". so i did a complete reinstall of my drivers (I had the 15.5 beta driver but after uninstalling i installed the 14.12 driver), however i still have the problem

the only other cause i can think of would be not enough power to the gpu, but i was using my pc for months without the problem. - i even tried replacing the pci-e cable

Thanks in advance

My build:
Sapphire R9 290 vapor-x
AMD fx-8350
GA-990FXA-UD3 (rev 4.0)
Corsair RM650
Seagate 2TB SSHD

Solution
The quality of the PSU is WAY more important than the wattage. Remember that the numbers stated by the GPU companies for 'required PSU wattage' are WAY WAY overestimated due to people using poor quality PSUs that don't make their labeled wattage.

A quality 650w PSU like a Seasonic will easily run a 290 without issue. But a junk 850w unit will not run it. Do not get a Corsair cx750. It is not a good unit.

Stick with Antec, XFX, Seasonic, EVGA (G2,B2)

i have tried all the above and i have managed to fix my r9 290 by squeezing the card with the tips of my fingers that solved for me.

I dont think my card is the problem.

While in VLC my pc will blackscreen within 15 - 20 minutes regardless of whether anything is playing or not,
I tried launching my pc in safe mode and could leave it running for 2 days straight without a single problem .

surely this means my hardware is not at fault?

The reason why is because you are using a 650W power supply when you need to be using a 750W power supply. You are not giving enough Juice to your graphics card and you are actually damaging it overtime. if i where you. I would get the card RMA'ed and buy a 750W powersupply and if you are going to overclock please get a 800W.

nope your are not wrong
tri-x needs 100w more
750 Watt Power Supply is required.

he is using a SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X 100362VXSR Radeon R9 290 and the SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100363VX-3L Radeon R9 280X requires a 750W well they both require the same ammount only clock speed/Memory Size/Memory Interface and Effective Memory Clock are different from the 280 than the 290

so stop suggesting low PSU because it can damage his system. better have 50W extra if anything or even 100W extra doesn't matter, the computer will Drain the amount it needs and not more. so if overall your computer drains lets say 600W you having a 700W doesn't hurt. but you having a 550W will hurt the system or even 600W will hurt it if it's not a good power supply. Better safe then sorry

i have never suggested using a low(w) psu with r9 what i am suggested is that in most cases like mine changing the psu never solved bscreens. do you own an r9 290? have you spent 6 months reading forums about blackscreens in r9 290 probably not. I have. i am not against using 750w psu i use one rightnow but it made no difference to me.

i work in IT section of a hospital, frequently i am writting specs for new computers and the main argument with my boss is why we have to buy branded psu with the new pcs.so we change psu every six month and worst case cenario the whole pc due psu failure.
ps. i didnt know that corsair sucked so much i thought they were quality products.

how about enermax(my favourite),coolermaster,thermaltake?

Most Thermaltakes are junk. Only the Toughpower units are any good.

Coolermaster are not good except the Silent Pro, VSM, VS, and V series.

Most enermax are crap. The Platnimax are great. The naXn, Revolution X't series Triathlor, / Triathlor FC series are half decent, but not recommended.

The companies to stick with are Antec, XFX, Seasonic.
