I have a 760G chipset motherboard (ASUS M5a78L-M/USB 3) and I wanted know what the chipset if for or what it helps with and is it worth the £100+ upgrade?

Solution
Here's a reference for the 900 series chipsets:

All I could fins for the 700 series was a couple WIKIs

What AMD CPU do you currently have?
A 970 chipset motherboard will do fine for a single x16 PCIe GPU. I recommend the Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P. Also great for overclocking. Got my FX 6350 to 4.950GHz on this board.
A 990FX chipset will support Crossfire or SLI with x16/x16 on both GPUs. A good budget 990FX board: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3. Good high end 990FX board: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX.
an X99 chipset on a motherboard can support up to 2 x 16 Pci-e express lanes for crossfire of two graphics cards.
Where as a 760G does not.
If an Amd cpu is used the supported HT speed on a X99 board is 2600Mhz basically 2600Mhz HT at 2600Mhz x 2 =5200 between the cpu and the main bus.
It supports more Usb port connection and will also have USB 3.0 port support. with USAP transfer speeds.

And more Sata ports are supported by the chip set also.
The board will be more stable when it comes to overclocking a cpu.
Plus you tend to get lot`s of overclocing features and options due to the x99 chipset, if you overclock.

Solution

x99 is Intel, not AMD.
