Just bought a new mobo with a new i7-4790K CPU a week or so back. I live in a tropical country with room temperature around 31C in the day. Using MSI Afterburner, my CPU registers about 40C while idling, but when gaming (particularly CS-GO), it reaches 90C+ to even 100C+ constantly. Even on a "non full-3D" game (e.g. Dota 2), it goes up to 70C. Very marginal improvements even when I take off the casing cover/

I have re-applied the thermal paste using Artic MX-4, but the only good I see is that the CPU temperature recovers to idle-state levels faster. Any idea what is going on?

P.S. On a side note, my 1TB HDD randomly disconnects. A failing PSU perhaps?

Specs:
OS: Win 7 Home Edition (64-bit)
Mobo: ASUS Z97-PRO
CPU: i7-4790K (No OC, stock cooler)
GPU: Palit GTX 650 TI BOOST
PSU: 550W
Storage: Samsung EVO 250GB SSD, 1 TB HDD, 250GB HDD
RAM: 2 x 8GB Kingston DDR3 HYPER-X
Others: 120mm case cooler

Your temps are a bit high (even if the stock cooler is terrible) have you checked that it's seated properly? How's the airflow in your case setup. Also what method did you use to apply thermal paste? This article outlines the best method for application. I would switch out the stock cooler as soon as possible as a general recommendation.

How do I check whether the cooler is "seated properly"? I just make sure all the pins are tight and I can't wiggle the cooler around after seucring it. As for the application of the thermal paste, I used the "bead" method. I have purchased an after-market cooler and is waiting for it to be shipped, just wondering whether this temperature I am seeing is typical of an i7 or did I get a below-average chip.
