Hey, I have Windows 8.1 OEM and I want to upgrade my motherboard. I will be keeping my CPU and cooler but I will be moving to a new case, new motherboard, and transferring to an SSD. Please explain as detailed as you can the steps I need to do. My HDD has 230 gigs used so it won't be hard upgrading to a 250 gig SSD. I have this computer about 5 months, but since I will be removing the AIO cooler to move it over, do I need to replace the thermal compound? Also do I have to uninstall drivers or do anything on Windows before moving to the new board. And should I move my data to the new SSD and THEN change motherboards? And I know it's an OEM, but Windows 8.1 OEMs are more lax than Windows 7. Besides, I can call Microsoft and get a new key if I need. Anyway, I'd realllllly appreciate your help, thanks!

What motherboard are you putting in? Depending on the board it may not even boot at all.

Also if you have 230 GB used and you put it on a 250GB SSD (Remember HDD companies use base 10 not base 2 like PC's use so to them 1 Gigabyte is 1000 megabytes and a computer see's it as 1024 so you don't have a full gigabyte. You have more like 240 GB or so, so you will be pretty much maxing out your hard drive unless you use that one as an extra drive to put stuff on and pull it off the SSD)

Going from an Asrock H81M-VG4 to a Gigabyte B85 G1. Sniper B6. I guess I could leave my extra files on my HDD and move some of my apps and games that I use a lot on my SSD. Right now I have 2 HDDs so I could use one to store some files as an external drive while I transfer my OS and apps to the new SSD. Anyway, after I transfer all that and have my SSD as my boot drive and one of my HDDs as an extra for other files, what kinds of stuff do I have to do to transfer to the new motherboard?

AH ok yea shouldn't have an issue then upgrading motherboards. You might have to update some drivers after and i would download all the drivers regardless if they show as needing a driver only because it could be a newer driver or a driver designed better for that board.

You should be able to clone your HDD to your SSD, toss it in and boot hopefully just fine.

I saw a couple vids that said to delete some of your most important drivers before upgrading to another mobo? Should I do this? Also, since I'll be taking apart my AIO cooler should I replace the paste even though it's only about 5 months old?
