My main goal is to have a 2nd SSID for guests who come and use my internet. I want to throttle the bandwidth to 10% of what I am paying for. From speaking with Actiontec tech's the C1000A is not capable of limiting a secondary bandwidth within its firmware. So before I go and try something off the wall, and possibly damage anything. Can I plug in our older mode/router Zyxel PKZ5001Z into LAN 1 port and throttle it's wifi through the C1000A? Can I disable the modem side of the Zyxel and have it be a dedicated cheap router?

Solution
PKZ5001Z is DSL modem/router combo, and does not have WAN port, so you cannot use it as a router, only as an WiFi access point / switch.
- This will not create "guest network" - your guests will be able to see all of the devices on your network
- Unless your C1000A has bandwidth limited on LAN port basis, this will nothing with your bandwidths.

Possible ways to do it:
- check whether there are alternative firmwares for your main router (there are none for modem/router combos)
- **somehow** limit the connection between the two routers to 10mbp/s (assuming that your main Internet link is much faster)

With the C1000A you could open up another SSID and utilize the 'Services Blocking' feature to a given IP address, restrict them from using FTP and Web, and allow only email and IM. By restricting one or more services, those that lower your own QoS, it provides some bandwidth reservation for yourself. Not an ideal solution, nonetheless, a method by which to use the C1000A according to its design specs.
