Guys,

This board needs a chip upgrade, and i need to order asap before my mother in law comes, this would be for her.

This is an AM2 socket board, but the website says it supports Am3... Like phenom ii x4?

I was always under the impression that bios upgrade or not, Am3 and Am2 arent physically compatible...

The motherboard website here BELOW says this will take a phenom II x4 which is AM3!!
Asus Board-HP

Can someone confirm if i can upgrade this board to am3 like website says?? Like if it were to have the correct bios????

Some Phenom II CPUs are backward compatible with the AM2/AM2+ socket. The tricky part comes with the fact that when those specs were released, many newer Ph IIs weren't out yet. The latest BIOS released for that board may or may not cover those chips. Also, you don't know what the TDP rating is for the socket; 95W 125W 145W... The specs on the HP page are way to vague to make a call.

I would contact HP or Asus and ask them for a up to date list. Otherwise, you will be taking a chance.

Don't get confused between Phenom and Phenom II CPUs. The 910 is a Phenom II, as is the B73.
Theses are the Phenom II quad cores that will fit the AM2 socket: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/TYPE-Phenom%20II%20X4.html
And are only recommended if you know the socket is a 140W. If your board is in a slim line PC, I doubt it is more than a 95W socket.
The Phenom II X3 B73 works in a 95W socket, but unfortunately it requires an AM2+ or AM3 socket: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom%20II%20X3%20B73%20-%20HDXB73WFK3DGI.html

I think HP played a bit fast and loose with their CPU listing back then. But if you want to use the above website to search out a better CPU than you have now, do so. Remember, it has to work in an AM2 socket AND probably be 95W. The last part is just a hunch. Maybe you can verify otherwise.

Guys, for the longest time i was sure am3 wouldnt physically FIT into am2. I now believe it can, now whether it will work is a whole other story.

Lets assume i get a Am2+ phenom II @ 65w and bios supports????????
:):):):):):):):):):):):):)

What now?

You're assuming an awful lot. But OK, let's assume. If it fits the socket and the BIOS recognizes it, you should be OK. Care to let us in on this mystery Ph II CPU?

LISTEN- you guys are starting to scare me a little there is a HUGE difference between AM2 and AM2+

lf you try to put a phenom II cpu into an AM2 motherboard you'll bend pins. the AM2 motherboard does not have enough holes for the pins on an AM2+ cpu. lets not confuse the issue. the PHENOM II was only compatible with AM2+ and AM3 (or AM3+), and only certain PhenomII cpus were compatible with AM2+. as far as i'm aware, none were compatible with AM2

that is an AM2 motherboard (according to HP).

Furthermore, and i'll underline this point. From what i know of that board and the socket in question as well as the chipset, i wouldn't put a CPU with a TDP higher then 95W into that board.

As a result i highly doubt that board ever would work with a PHII x3 or x4. phenom, sure, phenom II?

no way.

@ ingtar33
Us guys? The statements I made are backed by links I posted. The Phenom II X4 920 and Phenom II X4 940 are compatible with the AM2 and AM2+ socket. Both the AM2 and AM2+ had 940 pin holes. How will either of the above 940 pin processors bend their pins?
And I never promised the OP they would work. I was just playing along with his "assumptions".
