Hey Guys,

Today I tried to installed this new cooler since I was having issues with overheating and now I cant get my PC to boot. I took everything out except the cpu ram and tried different sticks. Not really sure what the problem can be. I read the error code is caused by a pci device but I removed my video and sound cards and the error is still the same. Anyone have an idea before I blow money on a new board? Also i cleared cmos a ton of times. :(

Are you getting any beeps? Fan movement or anything?
Make sure the CPU fan is plugged in correctly

-If none of that works

Then you'll have to try this-
Unplug everything(Power cable first) except the CPU and cooler and one stick of ram in the No1 slot. Connect the 24 and 8 pin power connectors. Don't connect anything to the front panel, plug in power cable, turn the PC on and use a screw driver, paper clip, etc to jump the power pins on the front IO area.

I tried all of these things and nothing :( there is really nothing connected to the board and I just tried to boot with the on board video and it would not work. The board has a power button on it so I didn't have to jump it. I even removed the cooler and put the old one and it still has an error. Not really sure what could have happened. The fans all turn on there are no beeps, but I dont really know if it would beep when it was working. I tried different sticks of ram in all the slots as I have 4 sticks.

The fans all kick on? Everything is normal except you get that error display on your screen?

Have you tried inserting your GPU into a different PCI slot?
Try moving any peripherals(mouse/keyboard) from 3.0 to 2.0 or vice versa?
Flashing BIOS would be my last try if I were you.

After all that and not being there with you, I do not know where else to go and can only guess that the board must have been short circuited during your recent adjustments.

-Apologies

yea the fans all turn on the CPU and the Case fans. The error code is on the board not the screen it has a digital display "dr debug" thanks for the help guys. I tried taking the keyboard off but it would return a no keyboard error on the board. I didn't try different slots for the vid card, but I will when I get home. I did try two different cards as I have a sli setup. I removed the sli setup then I removed both cards and tried to boot without any cards and it still shows the same error code.

I know its a long shot but I seen it happen .. you were careful with the thermal paste and did not drip any where it should not be ? most is conductive and if it got down in something that could cause a short like in the pci-e slot or had some film on your fingers and touched something that it contacted with handling a part ?

Thanks for your help everyone I figured it out so I will share what info I have in case someone will be as slow as me. I finally was able to get into contact with asrock and it took them less than a minute to figure it out which was cool, but also kind of annoying that they don't give us the ability to know the exact reason an error code is thrown here are the steps we did.

1. Take out the ram what code do you get . We got error code 53 with no ram installed. which is what he expected.
2. put ram back in what code do you get. got same code 99
3. reset and hit F2 on the keyboard what error code did you get? does it change. Yes it changed to I think b6 or something with a b in it.
4. ok so that is telling you that the motherboard is in the bios screen and is functioning fine. The board is fine and code 99 means the monitor is not accepting the resolution the board is giving it.
5. this was confusing since it has been working fine and I never had an issue before with resolution.
6. I said thanks and hung up and grabbed my laptop connected it to my monitor. My laptops screen turned off so I surely thought it was gonig to appear on the monitor. NOPE! my monitor glitched some how I disconnected everything and turned it back on and everything was fine.

So I am pretty embarrassed it took me over 8 hours finally giving up and almost purchasing a new $300 board and giving up on asrock. but as it turns out that error code has nothing to do with a PCI card error and in the future it is a very important step to see if the board will enter the bios even with no screen visible by hitting F2 which will change the error code letting you know the board is actually working. I have no idea why my monitor chose that time to freak out maybe the changing of the hardware sent a bad signal to it or something. Hopefully this info can be used to help someone else troubleshoot.

I contacted asrock about why the debug codes were noit in any of the paperwork or manual - they said they were posted on there site - I said so if this was my only means to get on line what good is that to me ??

but like you they quickly answered my ?'s and all was and still is good with this z87 ex6. I'm way happier with this asrock then I was with my ''last'' asus

at least you up and going , enjoy

I understand them not putting the complete manual for cost reasons and also due to the amount of revisions they make as I work in the car industry and we are going that route too. The problem mostly that I did download the manual online and the error codes are not broken down enough. They are too vague to interpret them and in this case it was flat out incorrect and they knew the exact answer which could have same me a ton of time and stress, but in the end the issue was not with their product so I do feel that I was lucky to have them figure it out for free.

it anit like the faq thing for the debug codes takes several pages of print ?? maybe 1/2 a page at best in the manual you get with the board ??

they could remove some of there hype that's in it and put debug codes in its place and give you something you may really need to look at and use -- like I said if you got no way to get on line your screwed and guessing - why have a manual that don't have that kind of important info ?? the back of my manual has 2 or 4 blank pages in it why not use then for that ?

seems to me just that basic chart in the manual is all you need to get some idea where to look if a code comes up .. not here at toms asking whoever on it
