Ok this will probably be more of a "please check my specs" thing but anyways here it goes. I am building my first pc and I have been doing a ton of research. Basically I want a gaming pc for $1,200 (This has to include windows, but not a disk drive). I will probably get the gtx 980 but I cant decide if I should get the 970 with the i7 or stick with the i5. Anyway please look at my build and feel free to recommend. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/RgfJD3

Please note that I will not be overclocking right now but I might in the future so I decided to stick with stock cpu fan to minimize cost. Also I will only be using a standard 1 TB HDD for now (I will be upgrading this in the future but again minimizing cost)

Solution
on that budget id def go with i5 and 980. you will see more fps. its a common question. you can search it on here and a ton of answers will show up.

Ok but do you think the rest of the build is ok? Like psu, case ect. I'm trying to not throw the rest of my parts "under the bus". I pretty much want a solid computer

Looks good to me.

I also agree getting the 980 and i5 is a better option than 970 and i7. The next big upgrade would be installing windows on an SSD drive. It's a night and day difference.

That was then plan, honestly I cant wait till a ssd can be 1tb without breaking the bank (5 years later lol)

I went with a i5 and it works well but I will admit I now wonder about the i7 and if I would of been happier with it ? hind site is 20/20 as they say ..

I do know next time it will be a i7 so if you can afford the i7 now go for it and don't leave your self wondering ''what if'' as I am

good luck

i would go with some kind of aftermarket cooler since you are going with a processor that can easily be overclocked. you may have heat issues with the stock one and its always better to run cool. everything else looks golden. as penzonator mentioned a ssd wouldnt be a bad idea. make sure you do your research on the motherboard. from what ive read asus is a popular board for overclocking.

Thank you for your time! and yes I have been wanting to get the cooler master hyper evo, but I also heard that the stock fan is really loud but works so I will defiantly be getting the 3rd party very soon after I build my pc

thts cool I'm happy with the i5 don't get me wrong but with it there is that ''what if'' involved .. was it a mistake overall ??? i'll never know until my next build or upgrade of this but I guess the i5 has not gave me a real hard reason to do so yet ??

in the end all you can do is what you feel is best . and stick to your price points .. for me I all ways built amd so this was my first intel build in 14 years so its a learning thing on that for me

but ya, I do wonder what if on that all the time and if the hyprrthreadig was worth the added cost .. I also feel I may of been as good going xeon seeing I don't need to overclock you may want to look them over as well .. I wish I did but not being a intel guy I just grabbed the i5 and went on with it

that xeon maybe a good road to travel -i7 specs with out onchip gpu for near the same price as a i5 [ if your board supports xeons as mine will'''

I did look at the xeon chips but I just cant have a pc that i know will be limited to never overclocking (yes you can overclock a xeon but not like the i5 i7 ect)
But yeah I honestly think their will be a new chip that will come out and it will replace BOTH the current i5 and i7 so Im beginning to think that the i5 is the way to go because in the end Im only a gamer and its all I need the i7 is better but i dont think its $100 better.

i agree. there will always be something better.

here is a video of both processors compared with a gtx 980. you can see there is only a few fps difference.

here is a video of 970 and 980 being compared. there is a much higher fps increase.

the i5 wont hold back a gtx 980 any more or less than a 970. if your gaming the fps increase matters more than how fast chrome opens.
