Are next gen GPU's worth the wait?

If I said that I was building a new high-end gaming rig, should I get two SLI GTX 980's or should I wait until the next microarchicture from AMD/Nvidia?

The latest generation of GPU's from both AMD and Nvidia are relatively new and I would assume that the next line of chips are more than a year or two away.

I'm just hoping that I will be able to smoothly max out Fallout 4 with two-way SLI GTX 980's.

Solution
You can spend your whole life waiting for the next new thing. There's always something better coming in a year or two. Just get what you can afford now and call it a day.

Need more info of which you can only supply some. What resolution are you going to be playing at? Do you intend to use a G-Sync monitor?

Info none of us have yet is the performance/cost of the R9 390/x cards. IF they out perform the 980Ti and are cheaper then it might be more cost effective to buy one or 2 of them and then a FreeSync monitor instead. But if you alrady have a G-sync monitor than you are locked to Nvidia (which is why I dislike the whole expensive G-Sync propriety hardware thing).

if you have no plans on upgrading your monitor, then 970 SLI will suffice, you save a LOT by doing that.

if you are patient enough to see what AMD can offer, i suggest you do that, it won't be more than a month from now anyways
