Hi,

I am looking at buying a router and a switch to learn more about networking (just some cheap, secondhand ones). Will most routers by compatible with most switches (and vice versa)? Anything I should look out for when purchasing them? Thanks.

Cheers,
R

Ethernet switches come in two flavors -- unmanaged and managed. An unmanaged switch will work with almost any other device. They are pretty much plug-and-play. Managed switches have many features and can be trickier. But managed switches are what is used in most larger network installations.

24 port 10/100 managed switches are available pretty cheap. Most have gigabit uplinks. Many have fiber capable ports.
