Graphics Card Power Question (8-pin vs 6-pin connector, possible conversion)

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new card, and have noticed that pretty much all of the newest models use an 8-pin connector. Primarily, my card will be used in a ViDock eGPU setup for my laptop. This setup is capable of providing 75w on the bus and 75w from a 6-pin connector for 150w total power. Though these newer cards have an 8-pin connector, many of them have max power draws <150w, mostly in the 120w range. As this is under my max of 150w, will I be able to use a 6 to 8 pin converter cable without any problems?

Also on a related note, one of the cards I'm looking at (EVGA GTX 960 SSC) has a max power draw of 120w from the EVGA website. However, one of the benchmarks here on Tom's Hardware (Link) lists is power draw as 155w under 'Torture' mode. I don't intend to put this card through any kind of extreme stress outside of normal gaming, mostly WoW, so I doubt I will ever hit that mark. But, will this card function properly in my setup up until that point? In addition, what if it does attempt to draw over 150w, what will happen when it can't get the power it needs? Is it a matter of a crash and reset, or could permanent damage be caused to the card?

Thanks for your help!

The converter would be usable in this case, that torture mode is pretty difficult to replicate, so I wold say you are safe. If it does some how draw more than 150, your PSU, it would come down to the converter, which should be able to handle it. also if it were to not have enough it would start lagging very badly and then just shutdown, or just shutdown all at once. no damage should occur. Just play things safe and do not OC at all.

There are gtx 750 ti's that run only purely off the pcie slot power.
