This was never a problem and I didnt mind it but now I need to transfer files over a homegroup and this is stopping me. So my computer thinks nothing is plugged in and wants me to connect to the wifi even though an ethernet cable is plugged in and the internet is working fine. Any way to fix this so that the wired option appears?

This is not a newly built/installed computer and the proble only started up recently so none of this helps... I have the latest drivers it is a bug with windwos itself.

Solution
if you formatted your hard drive or built your pc then you may be missiing the drivers for the ethernet. to fix it just search the model number of your motherboard and download the ethernet/lan port driver from the manufacturers webstie.

What he said. Or use your installation CD if you have one.
