I don't fully understand N-link and the memory bandwith for gpus. So this question may be dumb, but will the current generation of motherboards be able to support Broadwell cpus and Pascal gpus? Basically, if I build now with a lesser gpu (Gtx 970), will I need a new motherboard for the pascal gtx 1080?
Will the pascal gpus need a new type of motherboard design or can I build now and replace the gpu later?

The pascal architecture is announced for 2016, and yes, will require special motherboards to run it. That said, a newly released GPU and a newly released motherboard [which will probably be high-end] will not come cheap. If you do have a lot of money for such a PC, hold onto them until both the GTX 1080 and the appropriate motherboards [none have been announced yet] are released. Otherwise, you should make your build however it suits you, and in 3 or 4 years, when the pascal architecture becomes cheaper and more widely spread, then you might make a new build

Thank you, that's very interesting. Everyone on the Gpu threads is saying just buy something now and slot in the new pascal when it releases. Do they know they'll have to upgrade their motherboard too? That's probably $200-250 for a gpu upgrade, maybe SLI 970 or 980 maybe the way to go for a few years. Hard to tell, but how "future proof" would 2 970's be?

Can you please link to where Nvidia explicitly states we'll need new mobos for Pascal?

Multiple sources indicate that Pascal will come to market in multiple form factors, one of which is PCIe. You will be fine.
Nvidia will not release a new GPU that can't be installed in the vast majority of PCs.
