Opinion wanted on best upgrade path for my system...

Hi,

Just looking for some feedback on best way to upgrade my system.

I started with an Acer M3400 out of the box, with a Phenom II x6 1035t and 4gb of ram.

My first upgrade was ditching the graphics card that the system came with and getting a modest upgrade of a Radeon HD 7800, and I added an extra 4gb of ram.

Then, when another older PC in the family blew it's mobo/cpu, I saw the opportunity to do an upgrade and repair in a 2 for 1 deal, so... got a mobo/cpu bundle of a GA-78LMT-USB3 with an FX 6300 for my system, and put my old mobo and cpu into the broken down machine.

I know the upgrade for mine wasn't a massive upgrade, but... while it is running better/faster... I still expected a bit more. From what I had read, the fx6300 was quite an improvement on my old X6, on various levels.

Anyway... I've got myself a 240gb SSd to put my OS on, as well as my primary software (Adobe CS6 and a couple of other graphic design programs), and... the next obvious upgrade to give the machine some extra ooomph... is upgrade the ram.

The machine currently has 8gb of 1333mhz ram (4x 2gb sticks).

I've got someone who can give me 16gb Vengence pro 2400 for about £80, which would leave me with 2 slots spare should I want to upgrade to the max 32gb the board can handle at a later date.

However... while I've read a few references to the fact that a bios tweak will allow 1600mhz ram to run just fine on this mobo... I can't find any reference to whether anything higher than that could be done. And if not... would that 2400 ram run at 1600 ok? It's a bit of a bargain at that price I think, and could also be transfered to a new mobo that can run it at it's full 2400 in the future.

I would consider getting a new motherboard now if popular opinion was that I'd get a significant performance boost by doing so. I've got a media centre build I'm working on that I could stick my current motherboard into, so it wouldn't go to waste.

By the way... I very rarely get the chance to play games, much as I love to, so... the machine mostly gets used for work stuff... graphic design, web design, video editing, motion graphics, etc.

So, anything that gives me a boost in render times and the like... I'd be interested in.

Thanks for reading my long assed post! ;)

The ram would clock-down just fine in your system if you wanted to see a big improvement that would be upgrading your gpu and cpu.

Hmmm... I'm not really planning on upgrading both cpu and gpu any time soon. That would be a much larger outlay than the cost of upgrading the ram. Bearing in mind, I should be able to recover at least 25% of the expenditure on the ram upgrade, by selling my old ram, that means I'd be doubling my ram to 16gb (of ram that could run at 1600 instead of 1333, but capable of 2400 in the case of a future upgrade)... for about £60 ish.

I can't see a new (and improved) cpu and gpu coming close to that, even if I sold my old cpu and gpu to offset the outlay... maybe £100. Just a gpu upgrade alone would be in the region of £120+ for a R9 280x as an example, plus another £130+ for an fx 8350.

So, if the 2400mhz ram would work on my existing board... even if I can only run it at 1600 for now, then bumping the ram to 16gb of faster ram than I have at the moment will have to do.

I'd consider a new motherboard if there was a budget board that could run that ram at it native 2400 speed, of course.

Update to this...

How about I swap out my GA-78LMT-USB3 for a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P?

That still won't allow the new ram to run at 2400, but then... if I've read correctly, the fx6300 dram controller will only alllow up to 1866 anyway... is that right?

If so, then that new mobo with an upgrade from 8gb 1333 ram to 16gb of 2400 ram (running at 1866)... should give me a boost, yes?

After selling off my old ram, that will eventually work out at about £100 total outlay.

Any thoughts?

Yeah that'll work, but it will be unnoticeable in gaming and other tasks.
also sorry I never replied, I've been on summer break.
