I bought a prebuilt PC a year ago, and I am ready for an upgrade. I am putting in a new mobo that will work with my CPU and I am also changing out the video card. I asked some people at the local micro center, and they said I may have to reformat my HDD. I do not have a disk for my OS because it came on the system, and I will probably end up reformatting my drive so I think I will lose the install of windows that I have.

1. Do I still technically have claim to a license of windows?

2. What will the steps look like once I hit the power button on the newly reconstructed computer?

This is my first time doing any major computer construction so I am hesitant to advance until I have ensured that I am not creating a 1200 dollar brick.

current parts: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LBmsrH (the graphics card is changed to a version of the card I want)

parts im adding: ASrock z77 extreme 4 mobo
Thermalta Versa H22 SE BLK MT Case
MSI GTX960oc 2gb PCIE Vcard

Thanks, first post so tell me if I did anything wrong or left anything out.

Solution
your operating system key is locked with your motherboard. you will have to buy windows again. you can replace it with the same model no problem, but a new one will require a new licence.
