Hi everyone

I have a problem that kept me anxious in the past few weeks

I have a 500 gb Western Digital Blue hard drive used for the OS, Some time ago, 2 pending sector count appeared and i looked in the internet about it and people said it will be remapped to another sector, windows 7 spits 2 error 7's (which report a bad block) with little difference in time (1-10 Seconds), when windows does that, the raw read error rate increases by 2 every time (Windows report the two error 7's at least once a week).

so the current pending sector count stayed like that for 2 months maybe.. on the fourth of may, the pending decreased from 2 to 1. on the fist of june, the offline uncorrectable increased by 2 and and the write error rate gone up to 1.

i think the read error rate increases every time it sees the same current pending sector count

hd sentinel says it's ok and report 97% health

Also something to note: every time i run error scan test in HD Tune and a red block appear, i stop the test and see that windows reported an error 7 and the raw read error rate increases by 1

people always say to replace the drive without explaining whats happening or if it is dangerous or not, i can't replace the drive at the mean time and it doesn't have alot of important data

please help and thanks in advance

Hi there TSBGD,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(
As it appears that there are some bad sectors related problems with it, I would advise you to back up the most important data stored on it.

Even though you have already tested the drive, you can test it with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool as well.
WD's DLG tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=fKaSBK

Is the HDD under warranty? In case it is, you can just contact WD's Support either by e-mail or phone and eventually RMA the drive.

Sometimes, writing zeros helps in similar cases(if the bad sectors are not hardware ones). So, you can try that as well. The thing is that this is your OS drive and you will need to back up all the data on the drive, write zeros and reinstall.

Let me know how this goes,

luckily, i have nothing important on this drive (the os and the other programs can be installed again). but unfortunately i don't have a spare hard drive, so i can't do the "writing zeros"

but what i wanna know is if this is something to worry about. something dangerous for the drive, cause i read some where that if the numbers didn't increase rapidly then it is not something to worry about ,cause all drives go through it

I wanna know if the increase in raw read error rate (as i described) is expected from having a pending sector

as for the warranty, does WD cover the middle east?

Were the test results from DLG different?

Yes, most probably the read errors come as a consequence of the pending/bad sectors.
As for whether it is dangerous, I wouldn't advise you to keep important data stored on it. HDD that has some bad/pending sectors on it, is considered unreliable. It could stay like this for years. Though, these numbers could increase really fast as well.

As for the writings zeros thing, you can use a flash drive as well(not another HDD).

WD's Warranty covers Middle East. Check these out:
