Hey guys, I need some serious help with some on guidance on purchasing camera that I can use for general purposes, YouTube uploads, and filming vacation scenes. I don't know much about the best camera's out there and I'm not really looking for the best, just something that is well-rounded, shoots 1080p HD, and quite possibly even have the capability of being waterproof. I say waterproof because I will be traveling to Cancun, Mexico and I would like to film underwater.

My budget is around $500, but less would be best. I've been looking at the GoPro Hero but realized that I might be limited on the flexibility of recording things. Any advice, tips, or ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance. Have a nice day. :)

They're not waterproof, but have a look at these 2 Canon Cameras. Both are within your budget and should be considered.

PowerShot SX710 HS http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx710_hs

PowerShot SX60 HS http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx60_hs

Yes, they're cameras, but both take incredible looking videos. I'm actually thinking of getting one of these cameras myself later this year.

Go do a search on youtube for these 2 cameras to get an idea of how good the quality of video these 2 cameras can shoot. Just remember, Youtube compresses video when uploaded to their site, which will degrade the quality somewhat. Still, the quality looks...

Also, be sure to watch in HD quality when viewing the videos.

Have fun on your vacation, bud!

Best of luck and do let us know what you decide on.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations! I'll read up on them and look at some YouTube reviews just to get a better idea about what they're all about. I'll be sure to let you guys know what my final decision is.

You're welcome, buddy!

Also, I'm not saying those 2 cameras are the best you can buy, but they're the 2 that I am most interested in. The quality of video they both shoot look much better than most of the lower end camcorders out there. I'm blown away at the quality of video these 2 little guys are capable of shooting!

You're absolutely right! I just saw some YouTube videos filmed by the PowerShot SX710 HS and the quality is amazing! The price is great too! The only downside is that it's not water proof :( . Regardless, it seems like a great camera and I will highly consider it.

I had another quick question, what is your opinion on the GoPro camera's?

Splendid
A current smartphone is a great video camera. Not waterproof obviously.

I've had a few GoPro's, currently using a 4 Black. Video quality is great, but its expensive, you can't see what you're shooting, battery life can be short at 4k, and you can't zoom while shooting.
Add an LCD/battery back and it get's a fair bit bigger without getting much more battery life.
I use mine for mtb and scuba diving.
