Cheap eBay "HD" webcam - was I scammed and how to operate the cam? (LEDs, zoom out?)

I just received a cheap £5 webcam off ebay, that claims to be a 50 megapixel HD camera in the title. Now after trying it out with disappointed, I read in the description that it is a "30M HD Webcam With Microphone 3 LED".

The webcam came with no software and it seems to be working with Skype and the Windows 8 camera app normally. However, it seems that the picture is far zoomed in, as I can barely fit my whole head into the picture. I'm using an external monitor that is pretty far away, so I can only imagine if I used it with a laptop it would be probably only showing my nose. The windos apps / skype apps do not have any option to zoom out.

Additionally, I have no idea how to operate the 3 leds on the cam, as there is no software available or any buttons on the camera.

Any idea how to operate a camera like this?

Also, I am pretty sure that this is not a HD camera, I think the resolution is 640 x 480 16 fps! Have I been scammed, or what exactly is the definition of a HD camera? If this is the case, I will sort it through the resolution centre as usually they're pretty good..

Thanks in advance.

  1. 50 megapixel for 5 euros...come on buddy...hahaha

Only recently have DSLR cams with that kind of performance become affordable lol

    HD means 1080p or 1920x1080
  2. You paid 5 euros for a cam that is terrible and you ask if you were scammed? Id say more like you got what you paid for. If you feel you were lied to, return it or report it to ebay.

Yeah, I'm just used to blindly purchasing stuff on eBay, as 95% of the time I have a positive experience due to their money back guarantee which makes eBay a really bad place for vendors who are selling crap.

Thanks for the clarification, then the product description was indeed wrong and its not HD - I'll ask for a refund. Still interested to find out how I can zoom out or activate/deactivate the 3 LEDS though, to see if this works.

That's just a function of the camera focal length. Small numbers like '3' are wide-angle, while 6 or 15 would be 'normal' and tele, respectively.

The 480x640 and 16 fps- that's low res, but you have to read the listing.
If it works for web video calls, I'd be happy. I can't get mine to work for more than ~ 30 sec.
