Hey everyone, I recently installed a gtx 980 ti graphics card (replacing my old gtx 285), and also 6gb of extra ddr3 ram (hitting 12 total) onto my motherboard. I've read some places that after you install new parts onto your mobo you should flash the bios? You see... I didn't know this.... and after I installed the parts I was getting crazy instability issues, and so I clicked the reset cmos button and ran prime95. I kept adjusting until I could hit the 12 hr mark with no problems.

Is flashing the bios the same as resetting cmos?

Okay, so now as far as I can tell..... the PC seems stable enough. Although when playing GTA V sometimes the computer freezes, but not while playing Project cars. I'm thinking that is more software related though, I could be wrong.

Was I supposed to "flash" the motherboard? Or is that just another way of saying reset cmos?

I know it was long, and possible a stupid question, but I appreciate your help :)

Completely different.

Flashing the motherboard is essentially changing the "software", firmware when referring to the software which resides in hardware. I've never heard of that being essential. Resetting your CMOS settings (the saved changes you make to how the BIOS is setup to operate) is not always necessary but at least reviewing the settings is.

The RAM you added, if it is not all identical, could be where the stability issue lies. You should always used matched RAM modules when possible, as some different brands, or even types in the same brand, may not play well together. That is why kits with more modules cost more than individual sticks; they do extra testing between modules.

I wouldn't necessarily rule out possible software issues. Check the memory you have installed and try to put together only what are matched sticks and try again, see how it runs then.

What motherboard? You will want to look at the notes associated with bios updates. Sometimes you see things like "Increased Graphic card compatibility" or "Increased System Stability".

Give us your system specs, and tell us if your overclocking or not. Thanks.

Also, I did install new software on the motherboard a couple months ago. I remember going on the EVGA website and flashing my usb drive so I could update my bios on boot.So I'm guessing reflashing it after installing new parts isnt necessary then?
