I opened task manager but there was only an empty window. I cannot get rid of it other than by shutting down the computer. Is

Task manager not showing anything and being unable to be properly closed sounds like a symptom of having a virus / trojan in your PC. Run a full scan of your pc with your antivirus and also with Malwarebytes, lets make sure your pc is 100% clean before checking other possibilities.

I agree that should be the first step to check. Is this a new pc or did you change anything in your system?

Did Task Manager work fine previously?
