ok so i have a dell inspiron i3847-5386BK
look here for specs http://www.microcenter.com/product/433260/inspiron_3000_desktop_computer

quick break down:
windows 8.1 64bit
intel i5 4460 (3.2GHz)
12 gigs of ram
i think a 300 power supply
1080p monitor

my budget is about 150, but that mighht change a bit. i have been looking at the gtx 750 ti because it can be used with my 300 watt supply, and it is easy to install. but that graphics card is a bit old, so i am wondering if there is a newer card that fits my requirements. Thanks for reading!

Solution
Even if you get a new graphics card, the power supply will not be able to support it. Even a 750ti will need more than 300W. The efficiency of your PSU is so low that it won't supply "exactly 300W".
And TDP corresponds to the heat not the max load, so yeah, 300W PSU won't run the 750ti, or basically any discrete GPU, unless it's at least gold, or platinum.
Until you've the budget to upgrade both, I suggest you to wait.
Very best

the 750 ti isnt that old. Your best options are either the 750 ti or the radeon r7 265. If you are willing to spend a little more, you could get an r9 270 which is a little old. Or the gtx 960 would be a good option for about $190

one thing i like about the gtx 750 ti is that it is easy to install because i dont need to plug in an extra wire thingamagig, because it draws its power from the pci slot. do any of the graphics cards work the same way>
thanks
