IDK, CPUs seems to not like me. My craptop would always claim to be booting up at 95-100 degrees Celsius and when I loaded games would run at 140 celsius and turn off from heat at 150. So i finally upgraded to a custom built computer. Intel i5 4460 processor, MSI z97 PC Mate mobo, AMD Radeon r9 280 graphics card. Seems like it should be pretty good. I read somewhere that max temperature for the CPU should be about 80ish celsius? Well I loaded up a pretty light game and it revved on up to just under 100 celsius. Just having my browser open it idles at 60ish which seems like its kind of hot to be honest. What is wrong with the cpu or just me???

Also, unrelated note, my computer seems to be saying my graphics is AMD Radeon HD 7900 but I am fairly certain my card is most definitely the R9 280?

What PC case do you have? It might be a good option to grab an aftermarket CPU cooler.

The 280 sometimes reads as 7900 series, due to a number of different reasons. I would suggest reinstalling your graphics driver for a start.

I got the corsair 200r. It seems like the cooler didnt snap through all the way on the mobo and i pushed through 2 of the push thingies more and it seems slightly better. Maybe since they were 2 pegs on the same side it messed up the thermal paste? Thanks for the tip on the graphics

Ok it seems like the pegs on the cooler did the trick!

Regarding the heat, it all depend on your room temperature, your casing and your skill to tidy the cables inside the case. Just make sure there are at least 1 fan pushing the air inside and at least 1 fan pushing the air outside the case. The 280 and your cpu is gonna get very hot since newer game demand of their power is a lot. Without minimal of those fan I mention, even if you bought a good aftermarket hsf won't do anything. Normally, a good ventilated casing for heavy gamer such as your require 2 fan going in and 2 fan going out. After having those 4 fans and still hot, then you need to consider getting aftermarket hsf. A cheap deepcool gammaxx 300 (US$20 less) will do the job. Hyper 212 is NOT cheap (US$35).

280 is actually a rebrand of 7950. My 7950 were detected as R9-2XX. Maybe you best download the latest driver from amd website.
