How well does 290X play 1440p?

In the title really. I know I can look at benchmarks but I don;t always trust them wholly, so actual people with real experience would be best.

Thanks :)

In general at 1440p r9 290x will do well, trading blows with a gtx 970 depending on the titles. For aaa titles turning down the settings a bit will easily get you above 40 fps average, and never drops below 30.

Just make sure your psu is at least a quality 650w to run this card, and get a decent non-reference cooler version of the card, and you're good to go.

It seems there's little to no difference between performance at 1080 and 1440?
Also why on GPUBoss is the 290x listed at over £1000 haha

The Titan was listed at $1000. The 290X at $320. And only .4 difference in rating. I know there is more difference than that in performance, so I was chuckling.

2560x1440 uses 77% more pixels than 1920x1080 to display a frame. So its going to be slower. Maybe not 77% slower, but obviously when you are pushing that many more pixels, the video card is going to be working harder.

Oh on the UK site it's £1000 for the 290x...aha

I realise that, which is why I'm surprised there's only 4-5fps drop in Crysis 3? Everything else there's a drop of 10-20fps at least.

Every game is different. It's impossible to predict how a card will handle things until it has been benchmarked. So if you see a benchmark, find out what settings they used, and also look the the specs of their system, because it is all part of generating those numbers.

I would not recommend beyond 1440p on aaa titles, fps drop below 30 will make it unplayable. On less demanding games at 3440x1440 you can still get above 50fps. So what titles you will be playing and what average fps you're satisfied with will determine a suitable resolution.

Not many video cards will be able to handle 3440x1440...

1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels per frame
2560x1440 = 3,686,400 pixels per frame
3440x1440 = 4,953,600 pixels per frame
3840x2160 = 8,294,400 pixels per frame

So 3440x1440 is roughly 2.5 times the work for a video card that 1080p is.
