System won't boot; no beep or anything on screen; only power LED lights

I am finishing a build (my first) and cannot get the system to power up. I will describe the system, what I have done and the problem.

The system:

Case: Streacom FC5 Evo with passive heatsink and cooling pipes
Mobo: Asus Z97 Gryphon Armor Edition microATX
CPU: Intel i7 4770T
Memory: Crucial CT2KIT51264BA160B 8GB (2X4GB) DDR3 UDIMM
SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 SSD
PSU: Sumvision PowerX3 500W (also tried linear PSU)

What I have done:

Removed the motherboard "armour"
Removed half of the extra heatsink around the VRMs to allow the heat pipes to be sited (apparently temperatures still run quite low)
Followed the instructions for mounting of the mobo into the chassis
Fitted the i7 4770T CPU to the mobo, checking the correct alignment
Applied thermal paste to the CPU and fitted the Streacom CPU mount, heat pipes and heatsink connector blocks on the case
Connected the power - 24pin connector to the mobo, and 4pin connector to the CPU connector (which is 8pin, though I understand that 4pin in is OK)

The problem:

The system does not boot or POST. There was no BIOS beep and nothing on the screen. One small LED on the mobo lights up, labelled SB_PWR (which I think means standby power). When I connect a small fan to the "assistant fan" slot on the mobo, it turns.

I have tried disconnecting the SSD, using only one of the memory cards (checking that it's in the right slot as per the manual), using a different PSU (I was initially using an HDPLEX linear PSU with a DC to ATX converter, and then I tried a standard 500W PSU). I added an internal speaker (as the mobo doesn't seem to come with one), but no beeps. I wondered whether the CPU cooler fan needs to be connected, but due to to the location of the heat pipes I couldn't connect the fan. I tried bridging the points with a bit of copper which made no difference, though I can't be sure that I did this correctly.

Any advice appreciated!!

Thanks for your reply, WaltzWorker. As mentioned above, I have tried with only the mimimal items - mobo, CPU, memory and PSU. I have no VGA card, as specified in my system specification mentioned above.

I have indeed read through the manual to my motherboard, but thanks for your link. As mentioned above, the system does not POST and there is only one LED which lights - the SB_PWR led, which is not mentioned in the manual.

Okay! Is the power connector properly connected? Page 1-35. There should be no 'bare' connections on the main power connector. The other '12v' power connection needs to be connected too! If all that's fine then we can try to 'work backwards.' Remove everything except the processor and boot. You should get something! At least a memory beep (not sure what that is atm), and that should be it; it SHOULD also give you a boot screen - then maybe jump right into bios.

The power to both the 24-pin and 4-pin sockets on the mobo seems to be connected OK (I have unplugged and plugged them in a few times).

I have removed everything except the processor and booted. Exactly the same problem - no POST, nothing on the screen, no memory error beep or anything.

One thing that I have noticed is that my RAM does not seem to be on the mobo compatibility list. Other Crucial 4GB DDR3 1600 RAM is on the list, but not the code for my particular one. Could this be the problem? Shouldn't there be a RAM error beep?

Thanks

Sorry for the long delay. No - that ram should be fine - it's within specifications of speed 1600 and type DDR3. What color is that "SB_PWR" led?

AHH!!! I started looking through the components, making sure everything was compatible... What I found with the PSU!!! There's a post about it here that gives it's specifications which when calculated give 165 Watts on the 5v rail and 216 Watts on the 12v rail - if i'm correct which doesn't seem good.
MB Manual page 1-36 says "Fopr a fully configured system, we recommend that you use a power supply unit (PSU) that complies with ATX 12 V Specification 2.0 (or later version) and provides a minimum power of 350W."
Review on Amazon.co.uk says

Try another PSU if you can.

Thanks again WaltzWorker.

The SB_PWR LED is green.

This is already the second PSU that I have tried. I have just ordered a third one on your advice - the Corsair 600W, which has a separate 8pin cable for the CPU. I will let you know how I get on with it.

Is it a CX series power supply? They use poor capacitors, but good luck!
