sound through speakers & headphones

i have a toshiba laptop and when i plug my headphones in the sound plays through the speakers and the headphones. ive done everything it says online but my laptop just doesnt recognise that my headphones are plugged in.

Right click your volume icon at the bottom right of your screen
Open playback devices
Right click inside the window, show disabled/disconnected devices
If you see your headphones in there, right click it and set it as default playback device
