Should I buy the AMD fx 6300 or should I spend £30 more on the i3 4160 and a new motherboard? Which would give better performance in games and which one consumes the least power?

Solution

FX-9590 vs i5-4690K is debatable. I would still go 4690k ofc b/c power and heat, but performance-wise, they are competitive.

You aren't familiar with Intel stock coolers, are you? AMD coolers tend to be a bit better. But OP should be thinking about putting on some sort of aftermarket cooler anyway.

But @OP: I agree that you should get an i3 with motherboard expecting to upgrade soon. The i3 will consume less power by a long shot. If you want to overclock, though, you might want to consider a Pentium G3258 instead, which is an overclocking monster and when well-overclocked can...
The i3. In single threaded tasks it is significantly better, In gameplay it will be about the same, power and heat the i3 is far superior.
The other big difference is you can upgrade to an i5 latter which is more powerfull then the best cpu AMD makes, and to plan for upgrading your fx 6300 would require you to buy a more expensive 970 or 990 chipset board.

Also with the 6300, the stock cooler is not that good and loud as hell so you will end up dropping $30 into a better cooler sooner then latter anyways.

Both CPUs will give you approximately the same gaming performance, but the i3 will consume much less power. I wouldn't recommend getting a dual core CPU unless you're on a very tight budget and want the upgrade now.

FYI the i3 is a dual core with hyperthreading so 4 threads, while the 6300 is a 3 physical cores with 2 "logical cores" per physical cores so 6 threads.
Now the i3 (and intel chips in general) have a much more efficient architecture and thus the 4 thread Intel = 6 thread AMD.

A true dual core (like Pentium or Celeron) I would not advise because more and more games are starting to have a 4 thread minimum.

If you want to overclock, though, you might want to consider a Pentium G3258 instead, which is an overclocking monster and when well-overclocked can rival a stock i7 or i5 in synthetic tests. You can't overclock an i3 as easily since it's locked.

it is better to buy an intel cpu as it consumes low power
also have high thermal stability
you can use it for a longer period of time
more stable overclocking

any time u compare an intel and an AMD
INTRL always wins
as u pay a little high for an INTAL cpu but its worth buying

FX6300 is a lot better and those who make comparison by power consumption and stock cooler are idiots .
so choosing FX6300 doesn't mean that mobo's for it are pricey actually they are cheaper if you compare to i3
and you will have a lot more money to spend on graphic card , RAM , HDD ,SDD etc ...

The original poster explicitly said he wanted a CPU with low power consumption.

More power consumption means a more expensive electricity bill, and more heat is generated. Even if you can keep the CPU cooled sometimes this can increase your ambient room temperature.

Plus, an Intel motherboard on a Z97 chipset will mean that he can make the upgrade to a bigger, badder Intel CPU later on, such as the i5-4690K or even the i7-4790K. While the i5 might have to tangle with the FX-9000s the i7-4790k is indisputably above any processor AMD makes.

My answer to your and other intel fanboys hype on idiotic power consumption topic is this watch it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBeeGHozSY0

and there are 1000's motherboard choices in both intel / amd
and he could get MSI 970 Gamming motherboard which is best mobo for fx6300 and is better in performance .

My current motherboard is the Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 motherboard and I have the AMD FX 4130 (This is really bad for my r9 290, this is the reason I want to upgrade.) I already have my ram hardrive etc.

My cpu is really old and pairing it with a high end gpu like my r9 290 will bottleneck it extremely. an i5 would be a huge improvement from my processor but the fx 6300 or the i3 might aswell.

sure it will be bottleneck if you use r9 290 or better gpu's but you can use such gpu's with Fx 6300 and MSI 970 gaming motherboard

or you could get more better mobo having both chipset (970/99) so that you could upgrade more in future

but in case of 970 chipset MSI 970 gaming mobo is best in this category .
