Will 2 gb + 4 gb ram work correctly ?

What is your motherboard type? If it supports triple channel, disregard this message. If it is dual channel, read this:

You are better off using 2gbx2 instead of 2gbx3

If you use 2gbx2 you can effectively use dual channel

But if you add another stick to make it 2gbx3, you will lose dual channel (performance decreased)

Your only options are 2gbx2=4gb of ram or 4gbx2=8gb of ram

The important part is, ram sticks must be identical in size for this to work (example 2gb stick + 2gb stick works. 4gb stick + 2gb stick won't have dual channel)

If you have 2x3GB, you will run your RAM in single channel mode.
It is better like explained above to have 2x4, 2x2,4x4 or 4x2 GB to have them in dual channel mode.
Dual channel needs to run all 2 or 4 similar RAMs.

Single channel is about 5% slower than dual channel, visible using benchmarking programs.
5% difference does not mean world's end, you will not really notice anything meaningful.
The benefit of having more RAM exceed the benefit of maintaining dual channel mode.
But really try to run them on dual channel if you can to gain advantage from both more RAM and dual channel speed..
