Wifi Speed Problems

Hello, I just recently built my first PC, and i am having some problems
I have a wireless adapter (edimax ew-7811un) it is a small usb thing with no antenna
i am not too far from my router, just about 10-15 feet.
it is slower than the wifi on my laptop, I am downloading at about 700kb/s versus around 2.5mb/s on my laptop.
Please help.

The USB wifi adapters are fine, but those nano ones, especially up against a metal case do not perform well. A USB one with an extension cable, and an antenna perform quite well.

I have a nano N150 one from Edimax. While I like the profile, some days it can really overheat after 20 minutes and just shut down.
