Hi guys,

I have a question about combining different RAM types.

I have 2x4GB Kingston Hyper X DDR3 on 1600Mhz like this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104244
and 1x8GB Kingston Hyper X Beast at 1600Mhz,
like this one http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-1600MHz-PC3-12800-KHX16C9T3K2-16X/dp/B00A771ZLO, but i only have one of the pair.

My motherboard is Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3897#ov)

How should i combine them for optimal performance? which RAMs go in which slots? Will they all work at 1600Mhz?

Thanks for your help,
Martin

Solution
Never know unless you try, I'd go the 8GB stick in slot 1, with the 2x4GB sticks in slots 3-4 to have 8GB in each channel and maintain dual channel. If problems and there may be, try raising the DRAM voltage + 0.05 initially and let us know what happens. If problems might need to try adding some voltage to the MC (memory controller) also

Okay, I will try it now and let you know what happens.
By the way, the 4GB sticks work on 1.5V while the 8GB one works on 1.65V. Will that be a problem if they are in different channels?

Thanks for your answer

Ok, I tried many combinations and the PC would start and work for 3 sec and then shutdown.
I ended putting the 4GB sticks in slots 1 and 3, and the 8GB one in slot 2. They seem to work okay at 1600Mhz, CPU-Z says dual channel and they both work at 1.5v. So i guess thats it.

Thanks for your help Tradesman1
