Hi, I just build my first computer, and it went well until I tested it. Fans turn on and various light inside the build light up, so the power is fine, but nothing gets displayed. The monitor just stays in Power Saving mode. Is this a broken motherboard? How do I test this? Are there any other possible culprits as I think replacing the motherboard is going to be somewhat difficult.

Solution

If you don't have the display connected to the graphics card then there is no point of installing the graphics card.

I don't believe I can connect the monitor to the graphics card.

Motherboard: MSI H81M-E34
Core: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core
Ram: Team Dark 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Graphics Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 280X 3GB
Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX
(Don't think the HDD, SSD, and Case are relevant here)

Take everything apart and put it back together again. Make sure the 6 pin cable(s) are plugged into the graphics card and make sure the 8 pin (or 4 pin) connector is connected to the motherboard for power to the cpu.

I had this same problem and it turned out to be the graphics card wasn't plugged in all the way.

Make sure fans are facing down when you connect it to the motherboard.

I guess I will try to take everything apart and build it again, but I'd like to know what I did wrong first.

I'm almost certain it has nothing to do with the graphics card honestly, but I could be wrong. My graphics card turns on i.e. lights and fans turn on so I think it's connected properly to the power. The orientation is also correct.

I'm thinking it's something on the motherboard, RAM, or core and would like some advice on how to approach this.

As already said, The onboard does work when a card is installed, but only after changing a BIOS setting.
For the first start, remove the card, leave the monitor connected to the onboard and see if POST-ing.

Wow I'm an idiot. Sorry, I've never really worked with this stuff before and I've been trying to learn. I thought I checked all the compatibilities, but apparently not. I'm honestly really embarrassed but I guess you live and you learn.
